Grace Murray Hopper
"The computer sciences MAN of the year"
In occasione della giornata internazionale dei diritti della donna, la comunità Women@DIISM vuole ricordare le conquiste scientifiche e sociali di Grace Murray Hopper (New York, 1906 – 1992), che è stata una matematica, informatica e militare statunitense, definita una pioniera della programmazione informatica.
Conseguì il Ph.D. in matematica nel 1934 a Yale, per poi entrare nella Riserva della Marina nel 1943. Diventata famosa per il suo lavoro sul primo computer digitale della Marina, Hopper ebbe un ruolo primario nella progettazione e nello sviluppo dei primi linguaggi di programmazione come FORTRAN e COBOL. È diventata famosa anche per aver diffuso l'uso del termine "bug" per indicare un malfunzionamento informatico, dopo aver estratto una falena (in inglese "bug") da un computer.
Hopper ha anche contribuito ad ampliare la presenza femminile STEM, diventando una delle fondatrici della "Society of Women Engineers." La sua storia porta con sé anche una testimonianza della società maschilista in cui viviamo. Infatti, fra gli svariati premi e riconoscimenti, nel 1969 Hopper riceve paradossalmente il premio "computer sciences MAN of the year" dall'Associazione dei professionisti dell'informatica (Association of Information Technology Professionals).

On the occasion of International Women's Rights Day, our community would like to commemorate the scientific and social achievements of Grace Murray Hopper (New York, 1906 - 1992), who was a mathematician, computer scientist and U.S. military officer described as a pioneer in computer programming.
She earned a Ph.D. in mathematics in 1934 from Yale, then joined the Navy Reserve in 1943. Becoming famous for her work on the Navy's first digital computer, Hopper played a primary role in the design and development of early programming languages such as FORTRAN and COBOL. She also became famous for popularizing the use of the term "bug" to refer to a software malfunction after extracting a bug from a computer.
Hopper also helped expand the female STEM presence, becoming one of the founding members of the "Society of Women Engineers." Yet her story also carries with it an evidence of the male-dominated society in which we live. Indeed, among her many awards and honors, in 1969 Hopper paradoxically received the "computer sciences MAN of the year" award from the Association of Information Technology Professionals.

Mária Telkes fu una chimica fisica e biofisica americana di origine ungherese, nota soprattutto per l'invenzione del distillatore solare e del primo sistema di riscaldamento a energia solare progettato per le abitazioni. Inventò anche altri dispositivi in grado di immagazzinare l'energia catturata dalla luce solare.
Telkes, figlia di Aladar Telkes e Maria Laban de Telkes, è cresciuta a Budapest. Studiò chimica fisica all'Università di Budapest, laureandosi nel 1920 e conseguendo il dottorato nel 1924. Nel 1924 divenne istruttrice presso l'istituto, ma decise di emigrare negli Stati Uniti dopo aver fatto visita a un parente, all'epoca console ungherese a Cleveland. Nel 1925 accettò un posto come biofisica presso la Cleveland Clinic Foundation, dove collaborò con il chirurgo americano George Washington Crile per creare un dispositivo fotoelettrico che registrava le onde cerebrali.
Telkes divenne cittadina americana nel 1937. Nello stesso anno divenne ingegnera ricercatrice presso la Westinghouse Electric, dove sviluppò strumenti che convertivano il calore in energia elettrica; tuttavia, fece le sue prime incursioni nella ricerca sull'energia solare nel 1939. In quell'anno, nell'ambito del Solar Energy Conversion Project del Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), lavorò su dispositivi termoelettrici alimentati dalla luce solare.

L'aria riscaldata veniva poi convogliata nelle pareti, dove trasferiva il calore ai sali di Glauber (solfato di sodio cristallizzato) per essere immagazzinata e successivamente utilizzata.
Ha migliorato la tecnologia di scambio di calore esistente per creare stufe e riscaldatori solari, ricevendo una sovvenzione di 45.000 dollari dalla Fondazione Ford nel 1953 per creare un forno solare universale che potesse essere adattato all'uso da parte di persone che vivono a tutte le latitudini. Ha anche lavorato per sviluppare materiali in grado di resistere alle temperature estreme dello spazio. Nel 1980 ha assistito il Dipartimento dell'Energia degli Stati Uniti nello sviluppo della prima residenza solare-elettrica al mondo, costruita a Carlisle, nel Massachusetts.
Nel 1952 Telkes è stata la prima a ricevere il Society of Women Engineers Achievement Award. Nel 1977 ha ricevuto un premio alla carriera dalla National Academy of Sciences Building Research Advisory Board per i suoi contributi alla tecnologia degli edifici a riscaldamento solare e il Charles Greeley Abbot Award dalla American Solar Energy Society.

Today is Christmas Eve, but not only that: it marks the anniversary of an important event in Science. Indeed, on December 24, 1948, the first U.S. house to be completely solar heated was occupied in Dover, Massachusetts. The project was led by Dr. Mária Telkes of the MIT Solar Laboratory and architect Eleanor Raymond.
Precisely because of her research, Mária Telkes was nicknamed "The Sun Queen."
In wishing you a happy holiday season, we therefore want to pay tribute to this great scientist by giving details of her story below.

Mária Telkes, was an Hungarian-born American physical chemist and biophysicist best known for her invention of the solar distiller and the first solar-powered heating system designed for residences. She also invented other devices capable of storing energy captured from sunlight.
Telkes, daughter of Aladar Telkes and Maria Laban de Telkes, was raised in Budapest. She studied physical chemistry at the University of Budapest, graduating with a B.A. in 1920 and a Ph.D. in 1924. She became an instructor at the institution in 1924 but decided to immigrate to the United States after visiting a relative, who served at the time as the Hungarian consul in Cleveland. In 1925 she accepted a position as a biophysicist for the Cleveland Clinic Foundation, where she worked with American surgeon George Washington Crile to create a photoelectric device that recorded brain waves.
Telkes became an American citizen in 1937. That same year she became a research engineer at Westinghouse Electric, where she developed instruments that converted heat into electrical energy; however, she made her first forays into solar energy research in 1939. That year, as part of the Solar Energy Conversion Project at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), she worked on thermoelectric devices powered by sunlight.
Telkes was assigned to the U.S. Office of Scientific Research and Development during World War II, and it was there that she created one of her most important inventions: a solar distiller capable of vaporizing seawater and recondensing it into drinkable water. Although the system was carried aboard life rafts during the war, it was also scaled up to supplement the water demands of the Virgin Islands. She remained at MIT after the war, becoming an associate research professor in metallurgy in 1945.
Until the end of her career, Telkes continued to develop solar-energy applications and received several patents for her work. Together with American architect Eleanor Raymond, she designed and constructed the world’s first modern residence heated with solar energy. The house was built in Dover, Massachusetts, in 1948. Boxlike solar collectors captured sunlight and warmed the air in a compartment between a double layer of glass and a black sheet of metal. Warmed air was then piped into the walls, where it transferred heat to Glauber’s salts (crystallized sodium sulfate) for storage and later use.
She improved upon existing heat-exchanger technology to create solar stoves and solar heaters, receiving a $45,000 grant from the Ford Foundation in 1953 to create a universal solar oven that could be adapted for use by people living at all latitudes. She also worked to develop materials capable of enduring the temperature extremes of space. In 1980 she assisted the U.S. Department of Energy in the development of the world’s first solar-electric residence, which was built in Carlisle, Massachusetts.
In 1952 Telkes became the first recipient of the Society of Women Engineers Achievement Award. In 1977 she received a lifetime achievement award from the National Academy of Sciences Building Research Advisory Board for her contributions to solar-heated building technology and the Charles Greeley Abbot Award from the American Solar Energy Society.

Benvenuti nella pagina della community Women@DIISM. La community nasce nel 2021 presso il Dipartimento di Ingegneria dell'Informazione e Scienze Matematiche dell' Università di Siena. La ricerca in campo ingegneristico e matematico è sempre in più ampia espansione, tuttavia il numero di presenze femminili in questi ambiti, seppur in crescita, è ancora minoritario. La community ha quindi l'obiettivo di creare opportunità per rendere coeso il gruppo, organizzare eventi di diffusione della ricerca, e individuare borse di studio dedicate all'ambito women-tech and mathematics.
Welcome to the Women@DIISM webpage. Women@DIISM was born in 2021 at Department of Information Engineering and Mathematical Sciences at the University of Siena. The research in the engineering and mathematical area is seeing a constant expansion. However number of women doing research in these areas is low, even if is in constant growth. The community has the objective of creating opportunities to keep the group cohesive, to promote the diffusion of research and the diffusion of knowledge about research scholarship dedicated to women in tech and mathematics.
